Contact Lenses Q & A

What vision issues do contact lenses treat?

Contact lenses treat refractive errors including:

Astigmatism

Astigmatism means your cornea or eye lens curves abnormally. This prevents you from focusing light symmetrically on your retina, leading to blurred vision. Astigmatism is common, affecting around one-third of Americans.

Nearsightedness

Nearsightedness, or myopia, affects about a quarter of Americans. If you have nearsightedness, you can see objects in your immediate vicinity but anything in the distance looks blurry.

Farsightedness

Farsightedness, or hyperopia, is the opposite of nearsightedness. If you’re farsighted, distant objects appear clear but close ones look fuzzy.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia occurs as you age, typically starting around age 40. This condition occurs when your eye lens loses flexibility over time, leading to difficulty focusing up close. The main sign of presbyopia is an inability to read small print unless you hold it far away from your face.

Specialty contact lenses can also treat certain eye diseases, such as keratoconus (cone-shaped corneas).

What types of contact lenses are available?

Contact lenses usually treat one refractive error, for example, myopia or hyperopia. But, you can now get lenses that treat astigmatism (toric contacts) and presbyopia (multifocal contacts) as well as myopia or hyperopia.

Inglewood Optometric Center offers the latest in contact lenses from top manufacturers, including:

  • Acuvue® brands like Acuvue Moist, 1 Day Acuvue Oasys with Hydraluxe, Oasys®
  • Alcon® brands like Air Optix for Astigmatism, Air Optix Colors, Air Optix with Hydraglyde, Air Optix Multifocal, Precision 1® , Dailies Total 1, Dailies Total 1 Multifocal
  • Bausch + Lomb brands like Ultra for Astigmatism, Ultra Multifocal, and Ultra®
  • CooperVision Biofinity, Biofinity XR, Biofinity Toric, My Day, Clariti 1 day lens
  • Scleral lenses (Zenlens) and rigid gas permeable lenses (RGPs)

Today’s best contact lenses offer sharp eyesight without causing dry eyes or irritation. You can choose colored contacts to change your appearance while sharpening your vision, as well.

Most contact lenses use soft materials that allow your eyes to breathe. But, if you have keratoconus or severe astigmatism, you might need rigid gas permeable lenses or specialty wide diameter contacts called scleral lenses.

How long can I wear a pair of contact lenses?

Inglewood Optometric Center offers disposable soft contact lenses that you wear just once as well as extended wear lenses that you can wear for as long as 30 days.

Sleeping in your contacts can significantly increase your risk of eye problems like infections and corneal ulcers. It’s important to follow the team’s recommendations for long-term lens wear.

Hard lenses last for a longer time, but just like extended wear soft lenses, they require cleaning to avoid eye health problems.
